The winners of The Star’s 12 weeks of fitness are Liz Hart of West Wallsend, Nikki Norley of Valentine and Abby Gibson of Garden Suburb.
Liz is in her 30s, and is a pharmacy technician.
Her competition entry was: “It’s Step into Life’s tips I must heed and as for your newspaper I will give you the stories you need”.
Nikki is also in her 30s. She is a part-time teacher and first-time mum.
She said “How old is the baby? ( A stranger did ask.) Nearly one , I replied (Oh dear, I need to act fast!) One step at a time (Be a good mum and a good wife.) Be healthy, feel good, (and step back in to life!)”.
Abby is in her 40s, she is an occupational therapist.
Her reason for entering was “This year I turn 45. I have hit midlife. My daughters comment that they have witnesses a slowly sagging torso. I notice I am pulling my bra straps tighter and squeezing my cheek butts when wearing a maxi dress. Now is the time to take the steps to defy Newton’s law of gravity.”
All the girls will certainly get a chance to fulfill their entry wishes with The Star’s 12 weeks of fitness thanks to Step into Life.
They have all agreed to the competition conditions of attending at least two sessions a week and appearing weekly in The Star, so you can follow their journey and maybe pick up some inspiration and healthy tips along the way.
Their fitness classes started last Monday, March 1, and the girls turned up last Saturday for this talk by Step into Life coach David Corin.
The first absolute essential in a program like this is for the girls to work out their overall goal for the 12 weeks and then break it down into bit size (weekly) pieces.
For example if they want to lose 10 kilograms, then they’ll need to lose around 1kg per week and then we’ll need to work out how they can do that each week via exercise, correct eating etc.
All the girls have decided to train at least three times per week, so that’s an excellent start.
We also discussed that what we are looking to do is change lifestyle habits.
People lose fitness or get overweight because they have the wrong lifestyle habits.
It’s a waste of time doing a 12-week program losing 10kg and then going back to the same habits as before.
You’ll quickly add all that weight again.
The focus for this week is for the girls to drink more water (one litre per 25kg of weight) plus an extra litre for every hour of exercise and to give up one naughty thing for the week (chocolate, alcohol, coffee etc).
Helpful Hint – If you’re starting a new regime, let your friends know. Ask them to check in on you and keep you accountable.
It will make a huge difference to your motivation.
>> Next week, the girls will tell us about the first week and David will give some more advice and another helpful hint.
