A promise to keep

03 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
The Promise Ceremony is one of the most important stages in the Girl Guide’s journey.

Entrenched in the guides’ values of responsibility, self-respect and confidence, the ceremony helps each guide gain a sense of belonging and achievement.

The promise is taken several times during the course of the guides’ program, as each girl progresses through the rankings.

Lake Macquarie division leader Erin Staniland said the ceremony is supposed to mean something different for every girl at each of the stages.

“The initial Promise Ceremony is taken about four to six week after they start,” Ms Staniland said.

“It states that I will do my best, to do my duty to God, to serve the Queen and my country; to help other people; and to keep the Guide Law.

“For the ceremony, they dress in full uniform and invite their family to come watch.

“After they make their promise, they are presented with their first Girl Guides badge of the trefoil, which is the guides’ symbol.

From there on it is taken each time they progress thro-ugh the junior guides, guides and ranger guides rankings.

“We hope that it will mean a little more each time they take it and learn more about the guides values,” Ms Staniland said.
