Buckley up to the challenge in Fiji

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
KEVIN Buckley has been training hard to ensure he will be ready for a 60-kilometre kayak around Fiji later this month.

The Merewether local is aiming to help raise money for struggling Fijian families.

He will kayak for up to five hours a day for five days as part of the 13-day Fijian Leadership Challenge, starting February 25.

By completing this part of the challenge, the nine Australian representatives hope to raise more than $3300 each for Fiji's Oceanic Confederation of Credit Union Leagues.

"The funds we raise will help local Fijians send their kids to school and provide better nutrition for their families," Mr Buckley said.

"As part of the program, we will be teaching families how to save the money we give them for everyday needs, as well as how to save for emergencies," he said.

"The hope is that eventually they will be self-sufficient."

After establishing savings plans in the Fijian villages, the group will travel to the capital, Suva, where they will meet with credit unions to share their expertise in financial management.

Mr Buckley said he was looking forward to helping Fijian children, many of who cannot attend school due to a lack of money.
