Cameron Park teen pays back in blood

18 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
A Cameron Park teenager would not be alive today if it was not for the help of some strangers.

Megan Ford was born 15 weeks early and needed seven blood transfusions to survive.

As soon as she turned 16 this year, Megan started to donate blood.

She said she started to give blood because she believed it was a worthy cause.

“Without the generous blood donors, I wouldn’t be here at all,” Megan said.

“Strangers helped me, and I feel like I now need to give something back to the community.”

The 16-year-old said she was grateful that there was blood available when she needed it.

“Blood is life and without it, we’d be nothing, more people should be giving blood.”

Although the blood transfusions had saved Megan’s life, she said she would have donated blood anyway.

“My older brother donates so I always knew about the importance of giving blood.”

Megan is due for her second donation this month, and said she would try to convince her friends to go along with her.

“I’m working on my friends to give blood, it’s a worthwhile cause and you never know when someone you love might need blood.”
