Junction Red Cross is the store that gives back

There is a place where you can shop for clothes and help the community at the same time . . .

A new fashion boutique store is opening in Newcastle next week, where it will not cost you a fortune to look stylish this season.

Redcross will open a boutique on Tuesday, February 2 at The Junction, and its stock will include summer and winter clothes, hand bags, shoes and accessories.

Redcross NSW senior area manager Jason Fox said The Junction was a great place for the charity to open its second Newcastle shop, after the success of its debutant store at Hamilton.

“I think The Junction will suit the boutique style that we do, but also, this store will be the only store that sells a mix of new and recycled clothing in the suburb,” he said.

Mr Fox said a national buyer sourced new clothes for the store and the recycled clothes were from community donations.

All proceeds from the shop go to local, national and international Redcross programs.

Local Redcross programs include Breakfast Club (where school children are educated about the importance of a healthy breakfast), Hands On (elderly and disabled people are visited and given a hand and arm massage) and Telecross (elderly people are phoned daily to make sure they are okay).

Without Redcross stores, Mr Fox said, many of these programs would not be able to operate.

“The revenue from these shops is extremely important and plays a vital role in making sure Redcross programs survive,” he said.

Mr Fox said he hoped the new shop would be as successful as the Hamilton boutique in Beaumont Street.

The Hamilton store has made approximately $100,000 since it was opened six months ago.

“We made 25 per cent more than what we expected, so it’s good news for our programs,” he said

Mr Fox said Redcross was looking at more spaces around the region to open more stores.

He said The Junction store was on the hunt for clothes donations and volunteers.

The Redcross store at The Junction is at 220 Union Street or phone 1800 339 888 for more information.
