Lake Macquarie Cycle changes welcomed

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
LOCAL residents have welcomed draft planned changes to Lake Macquarie's cycling network.

Lake Macquarie City Council held a series of stalls in January to gauge the public's opinion of the plans.

Council's Narelle Stone, who was at the Australia Day stall in Speers Point Park, said it was well-attended.

"Most people just want to know what's going on in their backyard," she said.

"The more input we get from people that use the facilities, the better."

The council commissioned consultant company GHD to rank Lake Macquarie's worst cycling paths, both on-and off-road.

It flagged 124 problems that need to be addressed by council and the RTA.

However, funding most of the upgrades will depend on whether the council gets approval to hit residents with a 9.8 per cent rate rise.

Submissions on the cycling strategy close on Friday, February 24. Go to lakemac.com.au to view the draft stategy.
