Merewether district to reopen

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
Merewether Girl Guides district is set to reopen its doors.

Girls aged between six and 10 are being recruited for the re-opening of the district, which has been closed for more than two years.

Garden Suburb dist-rict leader Elizabeth Baker said it was time for another club in the Newcastle region to open up.

“We are hoping to get 10 girls, as well as two leaders and a district leader,” Ms Baker said.

“There is also a possibility for another 10 to 14 aged group if we get more leaders.”

There are clubs operating at New Lambton, Garden Suburb, Edgeworth and Glendale that fall under the Newcastle division map.

Ms Baker said guides provided an opportunity for young women to learn a about the out-doors and leadership.

“The skills they learn set them up for life,” she said.

“We are also planning to revamp the facilities and put in a kitchenette so we can have sleep-overs.”

There will be an information session held at the Merewether base in Henry Park, Hamilton South, on Saturday March 20 at 2pm.
