Up-and-coming fashion designer Sheena Roberts from Dudley has won the inaugural Frock On, Newcastle, Designer of the Year 2009 award.
Ms Roberts took out the major award and picked up $2500 in cash and prizes for her entry in the Red Carpet category.
Her award was announced along with seven other category winners at a gala fashion parade in front of 450 fashion fans at the University of Newcastle on Saturday night.
Event organisers Vanessa Swilks and Agata Rynkiewicz said the night was a great success with 92 entrants and more than 200 unique garments on exhibition for the sold out show.
Other winners on the night were Olesya Cholki for Workmanship; Renee lee Mayo for Swimwear and Beachwear; Gemma Anastasiou for Streetwear; Heidi Stewart for Fashion Accessories; Jane Thorou-ghgood fro Recycled threads and Ting Ting Yip for Cocktail.
The top designs will be showcased again this Saturday, July 4, with parades at 11am and 1pm, in the upstairs fashion precinct at Westfield Kotara.
The parade was also a fundraising event for the Autism Spectrum Australia Hunter School.
The amount raised was still being counted when The Star went to press.
