Roberts’ strange string art

10 Dec, 2008 04:00 AM
Some may find a piece of string wrapped around a mummified frog quite strange.

But not to artist Emily Roberts, who has included it in her latest exhibition.

The Adamstown Heights resident gave out a piece of string to Newcastle Art School volunteers and asked them to do whatever they wanted to it and return it back to her within a week.

Roberts said the pieces of string had changed into something else.

“One piece was cast in resin, another volunteer wrapped the string around her big toe and one was wrapped around a gum nut.”

Conceptual art has always fascinated Roberts, who is in her final year of art at Newcastle TAFE.

“There is just a passion to create something completely different; I like to make people think about my work. I tried to produce something that hasn’t already been done.”

Roberts’ work will be shown at the DepARTure exhibition at Podspace Gallery, 3/231 King Street from December 10 to December 20.
