Newcastle high schools will be strongly represented this week in Ballina for the NSW school State Surfing Titles.

Jess Adams and Wes Bainbridge are considered favourites for the Under 18's title where they will compete in the team's event.

Ryan Callinan will represent St Pius for the individual title and Phillipa Anderson will represent St Phillips in the girl's individual title.

The Fiji Pro rapped up last week with American surfer Damian Hobgood winning the event and Aussie tour rookie Shaun Cansdell placing second.

This is Shaun's best result this year moving him up to eighth on the ladder.

The tour now moves onto Mexico for the Rip Curl Pro which is labelled Somewhere in Mexico.

Rip Curl and the ASP are doing this in hope to keep this place which has been labelled "paradise" a secret to avoid over population and unnecessary exposure to the quiet coastal town.

The event starts on June 20.

The Chiba Pro was won by Japan's wonder kid Tanaka Hideyoshi beating Australians Dion Atkinson, Mat Wilkinson and Mat Jones in the final.

Lake Munmorah's Michael Spencer and Nelson Bay's Nick Coglan were the highest placed of the locals making it to the quarter finals.

Catherine Hill Bay's Drew McPherson made it to round 96.

The boys are now off to the Maldives for the four-star event.
