Hunters women keep playoff hopes alive

03 Jun, 2009 12:30 PM
The Newcastle Hunters have hung on to their hopes of making the 2009 Waratah Conference finals, with an unlikely 63-51 victory in Canberra last weekend, May 30-31.

Taking a reduced squad of just eight players to Canberra, the Hunters were inspired by veteran Dimity Stewart (21 points, 12 rebounds), and now sit just outside the top six with five wins and six losses.

Despite a poor shooting percentage from the foul line and three-point line, the Hunters were able to generate great defensive pressure, restricting the Nationals to just 26 per cent from the field.

Maddi Allen smacked a season high seven blocks, while guards Suzi Walmsley and Cheryl Wills picked up four steals each; in helping force 24 turnovers out of Canberra.

Forwards Katie Ebzery (12 points, 5 assists) and Kristen Forbes (11 points) also made solid contributions at the offensive end.

It was a great win for the Hunters, keeping them in touch with sixth place Hills (6 wins, 5 losses).

The Hunters women will have a weekend off for the June long weekend, before heading to Manly to take on the fifth placed Sea-Eagles.
