Getting in the throw with Newcastle Judo champs

11 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
When Kynan Ward and Jayden Sawyer turned up for Judo training at Newcastle PCYC, they were both a little on the chubby side and Kynan was having trouble with school bullies.

But now both are sporting a swag of championship medals and are looking firm and fit according to their sensei Ken McKenzie.

And Kynan knows exactly what to do when faced with school bullies.

“I needed to use it once at school,” Kynan confessed sheepishly.

“A bully jumped on my back and wrestled me to the ground.

“I wrapped my legs around his head and got him off me.”

Both Kynan, 9, from Stockton, and Jayden, 12 from New Lambton, showed off their skills at the recent NSW PCYC State Champion-ships and NSW Country-City Judo Championships.

Kynan, who has been studying Judo for about 12 months, took home a gold medal in the U10, under 32 kilograms division and bronze in the U13, U32kg at the City-Country Championships, as well as a bronze in the U10, U32kg Country competition.

The little marshal artist also grabbed two silvers in the U10, U30kg and U36kg divisions at the NSW PCYC competition and was awarded the U10 Throw of the Day for a Tai Otoshi body drop.

Jayden, who has been practicing Judo for less than six months, also had success at both meets.

At the PCYC State Championships, Jayden won two gold medals in the U13, U50kg and U55kg divisions.

At the Country-City Championships, he took gold in the U13, U55kg and silver in the U60kg, showing he isn’t afraid to fight above his weight.

He was also awarded the throw of the day for an O-Soto Gari leg throw.

Sensei McKenzie from Samurai Judo Academy said both the boys were very fast learners and had the potential to go far in the Olympic sport.
