A draw but some promise from the Newcastle Jets

Brisbane Roar 1 Newcastle Jets 1

The Jets played out a disappointing draw with Brisbane Roar last Friday to extend their winless run on the road this season.

The Jets made an impressive start as they looked to attack Brisbane from the offset. Matt Thompson ran onto a nice through ball in the opening minutes but he pulled his shot wide and Michael Bridges showed some great skill when he looped a ball over the defence to find Labinot Haliti but the striker hesitated and the chance was lost.

Another run by Thompson just past the half-hour mark found Bridges out on the right and his cross was well met by Haliti to score his third goal in three games.

He did well to meet the header despite being surrounded by defenders.

The lead didn’t last and the Jets again conceded a penalty a few minutes later when they made a mess of a Brisbane corner.

Ben Kennedy came out to collect but got nowhere near it.

Then Adam D’Apuzzo got himself in a tangle and clumsily hand balled it to give Van Dyke a chance from the spot and the big Dutchman didn’t waste it.

The second half was a stubborn affair with neither side really going close to a second goal.

Brisbane enjoyed more possession but they failed to move the ball quickly enough and as a result chances were limited.

In contrast the Jets did move the ball quickly at times but their execution was poor. Branko Culina has the team trying to play good football and whilst they are falling short far too often and guilty of a lack of quality, you can see the ideas are there. Keeping possession and using the ball early, particularly away from home is wise, they just need to use it better.

I think the coach is being let down by some of his players too often.

A point is a valuable gain but they need to start turning potential wins into real wins.

There’s been a notable change in the Jets game over the last few months.

In the past they had been guilty of a slow start and letting other teams in early leaving themselves a mountain to climb.

Now they come out firing and pin opposing teams back, often scoring first, but don’t seem to be able to maintain it.

It’s not perfect but something to build on.

This result still leaves the Jets at the bottom of the A-League ladder on goal difference level on points with Brisbane and Wellington.

The Jets do have a game in hand against Wellington and the two meet tonight, Wednesday, November 4, in Wellington.

Culina will be in no doubt that he has a tough game on his hands if they are going to get anything from it but three points are a must if they want any real chance of making something from their season.

Whilst disappointed with the outcome I’m encouraged by the performance. Without sounding too defeatist I think this season could be beyond them, although I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

However, the basis is there for a solid future and it bodes well.

A win tonight and the Jets will go into next weekend’s game against Queensland full of optimism. We can only hope.
