Hunter Clubs dominate series

18 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
After three rounds of competition, the dominant crews start to break away from the pack in testing windy conditions at Umina Beach on the Central Coast last Sunday, November 15.

Dixon Park continues to lead the way in the open men’s division, by doubling up after a big day of 10 races the day before in the Ocean Thunder.

They were followed closely by Macmasters and Terrigal after three races and a final.

In the open women’s event, local crew Nobbys Pasha’s return to the elite female division, finishing a credible third in the final behind previous champions Avoca Zenith and Macmasters.

Other crews to watch include the under 23 men’s crew from Swansea Belmont who proved their increasing potential when the top of their division was mixed with the top open crews in a super final.

Finishing second after Avoca has highlighted the up and coming talent in the younger divisions, keeping the older divisions on their toes.

In the U23 Women’s event, Umina lead the way in first place followed by Swansea Belmont and Cooks Hill.

Other highlights include the U19 Nobbys Diggers finishing first in the final ahead of Dixon Park and Swansea Belmont.

The Caves Beach Reserves crew had another good day finishing second in the final, after double dipping in the Masters division, which they won.

The Peters Surf Boat Series is the local competition for both Hunter and Central Coast clubs, attracting many crews from both areas over the years as their regular battle field throughout the season.

This local competition provides an indication of race fitness around Australia, with a number of crews each year finding success at national level.

The next round will be at Caves Beach on Sunday, December 6.

The Hunter Branch Representative male and female teams will be announced shortly for the NSW Interbranch Championships, to represent the region at Cape Hawke, Forster, on December 12 and 13.
