Merewether surfer Jake Sylvester was the highest-placed local in the Chiko Pro junior over the weekend at Newcastle Beach.
The event was moved from Merwether to Newcastle due to the lack of swell and strong north-east winds.
Jake adapted to the change of conditions with ease and placed equal fifth.
This is Jake’s best result on the junior series and will help towards his ceding for his first full-time assault on the series next year.
The event was won by ratings leader Mitch Crews from Queensland.
Phillipa Anderson also had a solid result in the women’s placing equal fifth.
The Sanbah Cadet Cup was easily won by Cooper Chapman.
The U14s was won by South Coast grommet Josh Szele and local grom Jackson Baker finished third.
This week will see the start of the main event in the Burton Toyota Pro, local duo Ryan Callinan and Jake Sylvester are the local wildcard entrants.
Big names set to surf this week are WCT surf Ben Dunn, Drew Courtney, Occy and Sunny Garcia.
