Masters of the Surf tough it out on Stockton Beach

Stockton Surf Life Saving Club hosted its annual Masters Carnival last Saturday, January 16, with a strong roll up for the main event the Surf Ski Team Marathon.

It is the only event of its type in the Hunter Region attracting Australian champion and Olympic legend Pete Scott of Redhead and his cavalry to win the 10km team marathon consisting of three team members of a minimum combined age 135 years.

The marathon course involved a start from Little Beach on the harbour side of Stockton, dodging the tugs across to the Nobbys Headland along the breakwall, across to the famous Stockton Bite and then back to the beach for the next paddle to repeat the 3.5km course.

Redhead A won the race in around 20 minutes with Redhead B in second place and Fingal Bay finishing third.

Other events included the individual surf, ski, board and tube race, beach sprint, flags and ironperson.

Team events included the ski relay, board relay, double and mixed double ski race and mixed beach relay.

To be a master, male and female competitors must be aged minimum 30 years to compete.

Redhead SLSC walked away with the top prize money winning the overall points score as well on 125 points, the home club Stockton on 100 points and Fingal Bay in third place on 70.

Carnival organiser and lifeguard legend Noel Burns of Stockton SLSC was happy with the attendance as the event attracted a high calibre of talented masters competitors.

“It was a great day and promising to see the spirit of competition well and truly alive in this age group,” he said.

“We look forward to further developing the event next year and in particular the ski team marathon to become a ‘must do’ on the calendar.”

The Hunter has always produce a strong pool of masters and the Stockton carnival is a great way to up the anti leading into the major carnivals at the business end of the season
