Newcastle Jets prolong their season

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
The Newcastle Jets take on Wellington this Sunday, March 7, as they try to go one step closer to their second grand final.

Okay, it may seem like a second grand final appearance for the Jets is hard to imagine after a pretty ordinary season, but let’s face it they’ve had their fair share of luck this season to get where they are, so why wouldn’t it continue all the way?

An expanded league this time around meant that the finals would feature the top six rather than the top four as in previous seasons and as we know the Jets just scraped into sixth spot.

An atrocious run mid-season was littered with the occasional draw or unexpected win but it wasn’t enough to stop them hitting the bottom of the ladder.

A run of four wins boosted their position but the poor form of other teams in the league, teams that were expected to challenge for the top spots, meant the Jets hung onto a finals place until the bitter end.

Then with a huge task to beat the Gold Coast they pushed their luck to the max and managed to get through after a dreaded penalty shoot-out.

So with all that in mind you could be forgiven for thinking that the writing is on the wall and just maybe they could go all the way.

They have played Wellington three times this season with just one win, which was the first game of the season and they only just managed that.

It’s fair to say that Branko Culina’s side have had their fair share of ups and downs.

Injuries, players leaving, inconsistency and erratic form has meant a frustrating season for a coach that was thrust into the role unexpectedly after the surprise resignation of Gary Van Egmond.

But all of that will be forgotten if his charges can produce their best form and give the Wellington Phoenix a good game.

With more than 35,000 tickets sold it will certainly be an intense atmosphere and by far the biggest crowd for either club this season.

Can the Jets do it? Yes of course, after a decent break since their win against the Gold Coast they will be fired up ready to go.
