The Greater Building Society has this year provided the Hunter Academy of Sport with $20,000 (an increase of $10,000) to be used to assist the Hunter Region’s ‘potential Olympians’.
In a process administered by the Hunter Academy, 12 youngsters who are performing well in Olympic sports have been selected as recipients of $2000 Greater Building Society Scholarships.
The scholarship winners are selected from all of those who forward applications, and application forms are made available at all branches of the Greater and at the Hunter Academy Offices during August and September.
The 2009-2010 scholarship winners are:
>> Shaun Fletcher, 27, Evermore Vale, for Track and Field
Shaun specialises in the long jump. He has represented Australia at the World University Games and in the England versus Australia Great City Games. Shaun competed in sprints and has been a Stawell Gift finalist.
>> Benn Harradine, 26, Eleebana for Track and Field
Benn specialises in the discus, He is the national champion. Benn represented Australia at the 2008 Olympic Games He is the national record holder.
>> Billy Joliffe, 22, Cameron Park for BMX
Billy is the national open champion. He narrowly missed selection for the 2008 Olympic Games. Billy has had a number of victories in major events in Australia this year.
>> Rachel Jones, 13, Cameron Park for BMX
Rachel was a silver medallist at the 2009 world championships. She was awarded Australian champion in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Rachel has won in excess of 10 state championships in NSW, ACT, Queensland and Victoria.
She was the Hunter region champion in 2007 and 2008.
>> Shannon Jones, 18, Blackalls Park for Water Polo
Shannon is a member of the Australian under 20 Team. She has been awarded the accolade of most valuable player in the Hurricanes National League Team. Shannon is a member of the NSW and NSW Country Representative and NSW Institute of Sport Squad.
>> Nathan Outteridge, 23, Wangi Wangi, for Sailing
Nathan represented Australia at the 2008 Olympic Games. He has won the World 49er Championship in each of the last two years. Nathan has been a silver medallist in two other world championships this year. He was the national champion in the Moth Class in 2009.
>> Jack Rickards, 15, Cardiff, for Gymnastics
Jack has been an Australian representative in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He has been a member of the national squad since 2004. Jack has won numerous NSW and Australian titles. He is a NSW Institute of Sport Scholarship holder.
>> Aaron Royle, 19, Maryland for Triathlon
Aaron represented Australia in the recent World Championships (youth division – 18th place – 2009). He finished third in the Australian Junior Championship in 2009, second in the Oceania Junior and was ranked second in the Australian Junior Triathlete of the Year.
>> Jennifer Screen, 27, Hamilton South, for Basketball
Jennifer was a 2008 Olympian silver medallist and 2006 World Championships gold medallist. She has been an Australian Opals squad member since 2004.
>> Brendan Sexton, 24, Louth Park for Triathlon
Brendan was selected in the 2009 Australian team to contest the world championships. He also represented Australia in 2008 and was a silver medallist in the 2007 world championships.
>> Liam Speers, 17, Merewether for Track and Field
Liam specialises in the throwing events. He represented Australia in the 2009 world youth championships, where he came eighth in the discuss. He competed in the 2009 Australian Youth Olympics Festival where he won gold in the discuss and bronze in the shot put.
>> Ty Swadling, 21, Charlestown, for Trampolining
Ty represented Australia at the World Titles this year, finishing fourth and was the only Australian Team member to make the finals. He won three senior men’s titles at the 2009 Australian Championships. Ty has been named as the Australian International Trampolinist of the year.
