The 2009 Hunter Academy of Sport school awards

The 2009 Hunter Academy of Sport Hunter Region Schools Sports Awards were presented at a ceremony held at South Newcastle Leagues Club last Monday, November 9.

These awards were presented in five categories – primary school girls, primary boys, secondary girls, secondary boys and school teams.

The finalists in primary girls category included Zoe Barton, Maryland Public School; Maddison Blick, Adamstown Public School; Maddison Elliott, Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College; Claudia Martin, Warners Bay Public School; Yasmin Skene, Hunter School of Performing Arts; and Paris Wright, Caves Beach Primary School.

The winner was Paris Wright who is a school captain of Caves Beach Primary School.

She excelled in swimming, cross-country running, athletics, surf lifesaving and gym-nastics, while at all times demonstrating good sportsmanship.

Finalists in primary boys category included Jackson Baker, Holy Family Merewether; Matthew Mensforth, Jewells Primary School; Patrick Moore, Eleebana Public School; Reece Pettit, Eleebana Primary School and Nic Sonntag, Eleebana Primary School.

The finalists in secondary girls category included Philippa Anderson, St Philip’s Christian College, Waratah; Tayla Hill, St Philip’s Christian College; Rachel Jones, Glendale Technology High School; Melinda Latimer, Hunter Sports High School; Grace Macintyre, St Philip’s Christian College and Mikhele Rundle, St Philip’s Christian College.

The winner was Philippa Anderson. Philippa is an outstanding young surfer who, this year among other successes, won the open women’s event at Newcastle’s Surfest professional surfing tournament.

The finalists in secondary boys category included Mitchell Crawford, Hunter Sports High School; Jordan Duchatel, Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College; Graeme Mudd, Bishop Tyrell Anglican College; Brayden Peterson, Hunter Sports High School; Harry Rodgers, Kotara High School; William Salsbury, Newcastle High School; Matthew Wenta, Hunter Sports High School; and Jordan Willott, Belmont High School.

The finalists in school teams category included Jewells Public School’s “Aerokids” Aerobics Teams; New Lambton South Public School’s The Electrifiers Aerobics Team and Kotara High School’s Kinetic Kids Aerobic Team.

The winners were the Aerokids. At the NSW Championships the Aerokids won three gold, two silver and one bronze medals, which made them the most successful school in NSW at these championships.

At the National Championships they won two gold and one bronze medals and had a fifth placing, making them the most successful school from NSW
