The Indigenous Classic kicked off Surfest at Merewether

Surfest kicks off this week at Merewether Beach, the first event will be the Indigenous Classic held yesterday Tuesday, March 2 and today, Wednesday, March 3, the Westfield Kotara 000 challenge

Thursday, March 4, will see the start of the Chiko Pro Junior where Ryan Callinan, Jake Sylvester and Sam Lendrum will be the hot locals to watch, they are ceded through to the main event, which will surf on Saturday, March 6.

Other locals who will be competing in the junior event will be Jack Scollard, Josh Radford and Wildcard entrant Kurtis Herman.

Merewether surfer’s Phillipa Anderson and her brother Craig both competed in the WCT Quiksilver Pro.

Phillipa received a spot in the trials for the Roxy Pro, she made it through to the final placing fourth, and the trials were won by Tyler Wright.

Craig received a wildcard into the main event after Julian Wilson injured himself and had to withdraw.

Craig lost his first round and now has to surf in the sudden death second round.

Kelly Slater showed he will be a threat again this year scoring the highest heat total of the round other first round winners were Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Bede Durbidge and tour rookie Owen Wright.
