Hunter Women's Rugby Union (HWRU) run a successful schoolgirls 10s tournament at Waratah Park recently from which a Hunter representative side will soon by announced.
The HWRU is committed to fostering women’s rugby at all levels from grassroots to our Australian representatives.
The 10s tournament featured both a senior and junior competition with more than 100 schoolgirls and some spectacular talent on display.
The senior final resulted in a 10-all draw between St Paul’s from Booragul and the champions from 2007/08 St Mary’s from Maitland.
It was a fantastic game and some players showed great potential to make the move to senior rugby.
The trophy ended up in the hands of St Paul’s who were not only the first team to score, but also completed the tournament undefeated.
Senior player of the tournament went to Singleton try scoring machine Ash Noble.
The juniors played a round robin tournament which was won by Singleton 1 who also finished the day undefeated.
Junior player of the tournament was Waratah’s Candice Clay, 16, who has also recently been selected in the NSW Women’s Country team after her impressive display for Hunter Blue at the NSW Country Championships
Around the park this week saw University take on Wanderers in a grudge match that pitted last year's grand finalists against each other for the fist time this season.
Wanderers showed why they are regarded as the premier women’s sides in the competition when they defeated the injury-plagued University side 50-nil. University had not been defeated since 2007.
While University put up a fight with their dwindling numbers, the Wanderers women were too strong in the backs, and broke many attempted tackles.
Meanwhile, Singleton Army hosted Merewether Carlton in a game that saw Merewether Carlton victorious 75-nil.
