Congratulations to the Hunter Boys CHS 15 and under team that competed in the intra state carnival last week in Armidale.
Lead by Matthew Wenta the team finished with a bronze medal and performed above expectations, beating a number of higher ranked players.
Daniel Burdekin, James Plowman and Macaulay Price were prominent in beating these players. The team comprehensively won their pool defeating all teams 12 rubbers to 0 except Sydney North, beating them 8 rubbers to 4.
Unfortunately, in the semi final they lost to the eventual winners, Southwest 8 rubbers to 4.
The selection of James Plowman, at number 2, Jack Maddocks, at number 8, and McCaulay Price, at number 9 into the merit team was a great effort.
The boys gained selection as the most outstanding players in their respective team position. Good luck to all our regions juniors who are travelling down the F3 to compete in the Medibank Cup at Homebush.
The Medibank Cup is an Australian ranking tournament with the competition expected to be very strong and a great test for our juniors.
In addition, this weekend is the Autopro Raymond Terrace junior round robin.
Tournament secretary Ellen Gordon is anticipating a good turn out with the round robin format giving the players plenty of match experience in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, over Saturday and Sunday.
Vale Jenny Ashford.
Last week saw the shock passing away of Jenny, a prominent tennis identity at the Hill Tennis Club.
Jenny and her family were often on the court throughout Newcastle and she will be greatly missed.
To Jenny’s family and friends the Newcastle tennis family offers our deepest sympathy.
