EXPOSURE to political debate at the dinner table at an impressionable age is what inspired Alex Coburn's love of politics.
This year Alex will have the opportunity to pursue his passion for issues surrounding mental health and the training of Australian doctors.
The year 12 student from St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton, has been selected to represent NSW in the Legislative Council of the YMCA Youth Parliament program.
As part of the program, Alex will participate in two camps in Sydney this year.
"I will be researching an issue with a group of people who were selected on the basis of their entry forms," he said.
"I was put on the health committee."
To improve youth-led advocacy and leadership, each committee will have the opportunity to present bills to MPs and state ministers in NSW Parliament, and that is something he is excited about.
"It's a great honour to be chosen and I'm going to make the most of my time there," Alex said.
On course to complete his higher school certificate at the end of this year, Alex hopes to achieve a balance between study and his passion for politics.
He aims to one day to explore politics as a possible career path.
