Newcastle indoor champs strike title gold

NEWCASTLE junior indoor hockey players have again shown their prowess to help guide NSW to Australian Championship victories in both the under-18 and under-15 titles held in Launceston.

Tom Duck and Ben Ferguson were a part of a strong NSW under-18 boys' side that beat Tasmania 6-3 in a torrid game, while Jasmine Etheridge had an outstanding tournament as the team goalie for the Blues under-15 girls' that went through the championships undefeated.

The Central Coast's Samantha Danckert was an outstanding contributor to the state under-18 girls' side which were also undefeated throughout.

For Duck, the championships provided a good warm-up for the season.

As a member of the NSW under-18 field squad, Duck will participate in trial matches before the final selection for the state team to play in the Australian Championships in Newcastle from July 3.

Duck will be joined in the under-18 squad by another outstanding Newcastle junior, Chris Boyle.

The NSW team will be coached by David Willott, the mentor of the local senior premiers, North.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle junior boys have started their junior indoor competition for under-18 and under-15 age groups.

The competition is run at the Howzat complex every Sunday and is the first indoor competition to be held in Newcastle for years.

Indoor convener Tony Duck said the competition was good experience for junior boys.
