Newcastle council job cuts in pipeline

NEWCASTLE City Council proposes to cut 90 staff positions, as part of controversial cost-cutting plans. Proposals shown to councillors last Tuesday included shutting The Loft youth venue, closing swimming pools at Stockton and Beresfield, and selling Beresfield Golf Course.

The Environment and Climate Change Unit could be "decommissioned" and the Tourism and Economic Development Unit could also be scrapped. Over two years, this could save the city $18.7 million.
