VOLUNTEERING is the best thing anyone can do, says Marks Point retiree Warren Russell.
This year the avid reader will donate his time for the second year in a row to the Lifeline Bookfest.
He retired 18 months ago and wanted to keep busy.
"I went in there and never regretted it," Mr Russell said.
"I always come out on such a high, it's so good for the soul."
As an ex-industrial worker, Mr Russell found the change of pace satisfying.
"I've been to places in Newcastle I had never been to before and made new friends that I didn't have before," he said.
Mr Russell will be involved in transporting donated books to the Newcastle Basketball Stadium.
Lifeline still needs more volunteers for this year's bookfest.
