THESE ladies know a thing or two about volunteering in the sports arena.
Fifty helpers from the Charlestown Netball Association will donate their time this weekend to the annual Lake Macquarie Running Festival.
The veteran volunteers, aged 35 to 75, work for the netball club and lend a hand in the canteen at the grounds on weekends.
Their role in the running festival is integral to the entrants' safety. Groups of nine will man the water stations, staggered at four points throughout the 10.5-kilometre race.
As the entrants pass, the volunteers will be on standby to offer water and sports drinks to help keep the entrants hydrated.
They will also hand out fruit, which they will have prepared the night before.
Charlestown Netball Association president Dianne Pascoe said a thirsty athlete was no stranger at all to these ladies.
"People that work around sport are used to volunteering," she said.
"It's exhausting but it's great."
She said it was satisfying to know their work was for a good cause, given that the event will raise funds for Kaleidoscope.
