THE under-14s Hunter girls basketball team will take their last shot at winning gold as a team at the National Basketball Championships next month.
The girls were narrowly beaten by North Sydney at the state championships earlier this month, but they still placed second on the ladder, qualifying for nationals.
Under-14s is the last age group that players are selected to compete as a team.
From then on, the girls must play as individuals and may be selected to represent NSW, in addition to playing for their local club on weekends to be eligible at a representative level.
Their win at state level was due to teamwork and determination at training sessions at the Hunter Basketball Stadium, under the guidance of Adamstown coach Daniel Palmer.
Palmer said the win was unexpected but the team was thrilled.
"They're a group that trains hard and they've been rewarded with this," he said.
National championships are in Ballarat from September 30 to October 6.
Palmer said the state to beat was Victoria.
