THE Steel City Malibu Surf Club regrouped last Sunday after its winter break, ready to ride out its next competition season.
Known for its focus on Malibu longboards, the club comprises 60 former Merewether board riders.
Some have been surfing for more than 40 years.
Founded in 1982, the club has a long-standing competitive and social history, with members aged from 30 to 73. President Wayne Elkington said despite the generation gap, the surfers had formed strong friendships.
"We've got a common interest so the age difference is no barrier."
Although the club is based around competition, Mr Elkington said it did not underpin the club.
"Very few people actually look at the judging sheets on competition days," he said.
During competition season, the club meets on the second Sunday of each month at Dixon Park Beach.
Divisions include A grade, B grade, "old Malibu" - using boards made pre-1996 - and the "anything goes" event.
