LAKE Macquarie library-goers took home a little more than just their books last week.
As part of Lake Macquarie City Council's Native Plant Giveaway, Belmont and Morisset public libraries became miniature nurseries for an afternoon as local residents were offered free native plants.
One resident that went to Belmont Library's giveaway was 10-year-old Zane Winder from Floraville.
He went with his family to pick up two plants to add to the family's growing collection of native plants.
Zane said he liked the native plants because they attracted lorikeets, rosellas and even possums to his house.
The plant giveaway is held by council at the same time each year to coincide with biodiversity month.
It kicked off the council's Living Smart Festival, which promotes sustainable living.
At the libraries, ratepayers were entitled to two free plants per household.
Almost 4000 plants 1 were given away.
