A GRANDMOTHER’S love for her grandkids, coupled with surviving breast and lung cancer, has led Carole Jennings to raise funds for children’s cancer.
For the past 10 years the West Wallsend resident and her partner, Peter Dempsey, have opened their garden to the community to raise money for Ronald McDonald House.
This weekend the couple will open their garden again for a $4.50 donation to the charity, which Mrs Jennings said was a special cause.
‘‘I think we are really blessed with seven healthy grandchildren and there are so many out there who are so sick,’’ she said.
She said each time they had a garden weekend they attracted more than 650 visitors and raised between $2500 and $3000.
The avid gardener said it took a lot of time and effort to maintain their large flower-filled block but she would not have it any other way.
‘‘Peter works full-time but I garden everyday; I have always loved gardening,’’ she said.
During her own bout of ill health Mrs Jennings turned to the earth for a remedy.
‘‘Gardening is a healing process, that’s how I look at it,’’ she said.
The couple are excited to share their love of plants with the public.
They invite everyone to their garden at 76 Withers Street, West Wallsend, on Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27.
It will be open 10am until 4pm both days.
