FOR those involved in the Bounceback 2013 exhibition, art is more than just a hobby – it is a lifeline.
Community group Arts In Recovery will display the works of Hunter people with a mental illness in its annual exhibition to celebrate the role of art in the recovery process.
Bounceback 2013 contributor Brian John Daffern said art had always been a part of who he was.
However, depression had threatened to take it away.
“I stopped art completely for a year – that’s what depression does to you,” Mr Daffern said.
Mr Daffern said Bounceback 2013 encouraged him to start back at what he loved.
“My life is essentially art...this is my outlet,” he said.
As well as it being an emotional release, he said the friendship found in the community group was also to thank for his recovery.
■ Bounceback 2013 will be on exhibition at the Newcastle Arts Community Centre from Wednesday, October 30 to Saturday, November 2, 10am until 4pm.
