CATHERINE Hill Bay’s coalmining history hangs in the balance after a firestorm swept through the seaside town two weeks ago. The Catherine Hill Bay jetty is the only remaining structure that shows the town’s coal history, after the inferno destroyed the iconic Wallarah House and Jetty’s Master Cottage. Timber sections of the jetty suffered fire damage, however, its steel and concrete structure remained intact. Last year, Lake Coal applied to the NSW government to demolish the jetty, but the matter had not been resolved. Lake Coal’s first priority is to clear dangerous debris from the jetty, before deciding what action to take.
