This Sunday, Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison will launch the Mayor's Christmas Toy Appeal at the annual Newcastle Permanent Carols By Candlelight, which is hosted by the council at Speers Point Park.
The appeal has been running for 20 years - since Carols By Candlelight started.
Revellers are encouraged to bring along a small unwrapped gift on the day and place it underneath a giant Christmas tree in the park.
Cr Harrison urged all residents to embrace the Christmas spirit and give to the appeal.
"The aim is to make a real difference to families on Christmas morning and to make sure no child goes without a present," she said.
Donations will be delivered to The Salvation Army, Wesley Mission and the Samaritans for distribution to local families.
Last year, these charities provided more than 1000 families with gifts and handed out $100,000 worth of vouchers.
■ Carols By Candlelight will be held at Speers Point Park this Sunday, December 8, from 11am to 9pm.
