The Jets defeated Melbourne Victory 2-1 at AAMI Park on Sunday, moving them up the ranks two places.
Newcastle’s win was due to former Socceroo Nathan Burns, who scored both goals. Burns is a loan signing from Korean club Incheon United, and his performance last weekend has placed pressure on Jets coach Gary van Egmond to keep him on the team.
Newcastle is now trailing behind only Brisbane and Western Sydney.
The team will vie for second-placed Western Sydney Wanderers’ spot at Hunter Stadium this Saturday.
