The Games are the largest multi-sport youth event in the world and is a recognised member of the International Olympic Committee.
More than 70 international cities have accepted their invitations to the Games, which will be held in the southern hemisphere for the first time.
Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison said she was looking forward to welcoming the athletes and showcasing the region.
The number of cities is expected to exceed the last three Games, with 77 cities at Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 2011; 81 at Daegu, Korea, in 2012; and 80 at Windsor, Canada, in 2013.
The 2014 Games will be held in December.
