The Jets lost to Perth 2-1 at NIB Stadium on Saturday.
Adam Taggart scored the Jets' only goal in the 61st minute - his 14th of the season.
However, the team was stunned by late strikes from Perth's Nebojsa Marinkovic in the 84th minute and Chris Harold less than two minutes later.
The loss was enough to topple the Jets from their top six position by one point.
Jets coach Clayton Zane admitted the team needed to win the remaining two regular-season games in order to make the finals.
The Jets will meet on home turf with Melbourne Victory and Adelaide in the next fortnight.
Nineteen points separate the Jets, in seventh place on the A-League ladder, and first-placed Brisbane Roar, on 51.
The Jets play Melbourne Victory this Saturday at Hunter Stadium at 5pm.
