The $11.3 million facility at Speers Point Park is expected to boost Lake Macquarie's economy and sporting culture, nurture local talent and host world-class players.
It is a joint project between the state government, Lake Macquarie City Council and Northern NSW Football.
Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison, Northern NSW Football chairman Bill Walker and chief executive officer David Eland, and Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper met at the field last Friday to mark the occasion.
The facility's construction is expected to be complete before December when Lake Macquarie hosts the 2014 International Children's Games.
