Hamilton resident Michelle Kot noticed sometimes these cafes would only stay open for a few months before closing down because of a lack of exposure.
She wanted to do something to help new places with publicity, so she combined her love for coffee and a desire to discuss coffee hotspots around the city to establish Newcastle Coffee Snobs.
Her idea was the group would visit new cafes around the Newcastle area for a cup of coffee and breakfast, and then discuss the quality of the menu on social media. Aside from drinking coffee, the snobbings would be a social networking occasion and new people were always welcome to join.
The first "snobbing" in April last year had seven people show up to drink coffee on a rainy afternoon.
Attendance rates have doubled for the more recent snobbings, which are usually held every third Saturday of the month.
This Saturday, Newcastle Coffee Snobs celebrates its first birthday.
