The recommendation is contained in the Property Council of Australia's submission to the government on the best light rail route for the city, which backs lord mayor Jeff McCloy's view the light rail system must run along Hunter Street.
The submission also sets a September 30 deadline for the heavy rail line to be cut at Broadmeadow and proposes an interim rapid bus system to link commuters to the East End. The 2014 deadline is necessary because optimism generated by release of the Newcastle Urban Renewal Strategy is being replaced by timing uncertainty.
