In round 27 of the 2013-14 A-League series last week they needed a final-round miracle, but were unable to pull it off.
Their 2-0 win against Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium was not enough to topple their opponents from sixth place, meaning Newcastle's finals hopes were in the hands of Perth Glory, who had to beat Sydney FC on Sunday for the Jets to steal sixth spot on goal difference.
Perth lost to Sydney 2-1 at Allianz Stadium.
Newcastle's defeat was a tough end to a hard season for the team.
Coach Gary van Egmond was sacked and replaced by interim coach Clayton Zane.
Jets captain Ruben Zadkovich said this upheaval contributed to the team's failure.
Friday's match was also Michael Bridges' last.
Bridges announced his retirement last week, and was sent off in style by a 11,226 home crowd.
