Both Mr Finney and his father, Alfred, earned Order of Australia Medals for their service.
Mr Finney served in the Vietnam War in 1969, building bridges, schools and roads, while his father served in World War II in the training corps.
Their tales are two of many to be told in Newcastle council and the Newcastle RSL Sub Branch's latest joint project.
The Australia at War Anzac Day portraiture film, created by Esem Projects, presents a series of portraits that illustrate Australia's wartime past.
It will be screened at the Nobbys Beach 5am dawn service this Friday, and on Watt Street every night until June 30 as part of the City Evolutions public art project.
Mr Finney, his father, and daughters Leah and Emma, are among the 25 people featured.
It has enabled the Finneys to celebrate Anzac Day in a new way.
However, Mr Finney will still be at the commemorative service at Civic Park wearing the medals, as he has done since his father passed away in 2000.
