Ms Gibbins, a 52-year-old registered nurse at John Hunter Hospital, has participated in athletics since she was 12.
In October 2012 she competed in the Australian Masters Athletics Throwing Championships in Canberra and won the hammer throw, shot put, discus and heavy weight events in the women's 50s division.
She then entered the World Masters Athletics Championships in Brazil, in October 2013, where she placed fourth in the throws pentathlon.
Ms Gibbins also won the individual hammer throw event, setting the 2013 world record at 42.29 metres, and placed third in discus, with 28.83m.
It was this outstanding performance that earned Ms Gibbins the 2013 Lake Macquarie Masters Sportsperson of the Year award.
