At home on Saturday, the North Stars lost to the CBR Brave, for a second time this season, going down 5-2.
Despite the score, both teams hit the ice with fury and looked even right up until the final three minutes of the first period.
Then Canberra capitalised on Newcastle's defensive errors to score three quick goals in one minute.
The loss, the fourth at home so far this year, has the North Stars still looking for a win at home.
Hoping for some points at the weekend, Newcastle headed to Sunday's game in Liverpool to play the Sydney Ice Dogs.
However, their bus broke down near the Hawkesbury River Bridge. Unable to make the game in time, North Stars general manager and coach Garry Dore was forced to call the game off. It will be played later.
After seven rounds, Newcastle are ranked seventh following nine games with only three wins.
The North Stars will play the Bears in Sydney on Sunday.
■ The Star has a family pass to give away to the next home game, June 7, against the Melbourne Mustangs.
