Councillors voted to maintain their current position that sharks were not a threat to swimmers in Lake Macquarie.
Well, it is glaringly obvious that they have never been to the pub and heard the stories from the locals about the alarming increase in sightings of sharks in the lake.
How the warm waters near the power station, now teaming with fish since commercial fishing ceased in Lake Macquarie, is becoming our sharks’ favourite feeding spot.
There are many stories about increasing sightings, obviously not making their way to our councillors’ ears. Belmont Baths is one of the most beautiful vistas in this country.
But the state of the area ensures that next to no one goes there.
Firstly, there are many rocks at the edge, you can’t safely get in, you never know if there’s a blue ring octopus lurking.
Secondly, there is so much seaweed; it’s not a very nice experience.
The entire area now has lovely walkways and landscaping, barbecue spots – but who’s game to go swimming?
And children are not safe to play there.
If this was in Far North Queensland or Sydney, the entire area would be cleared and maintained with lovely sand – and the rate payers of Lake Macquarie would be able to properly enjoy one of this country’s most spectacular areas.
Get a reality check councillors – put the maintenance of our lake back on your agenda.
Stop being so blind about sharks in Lake Macquarie.
