They have the best view in the house of the improvements happening along our coastline.
During this beach season we can all expect to see a lot of change along the coastal strip as the implementation of the Newcastle Coastline Revitalisation Masterplan steps up a gear.
The improvements to the Bar Beach section of the Bathers Way are already proving popular with the path widening and construction of a viewing platform.
However, the most significant changes to date is the transformation of the Merewether Beach outdoor spaces.
The Watkins Street car park upgrade is complete and our crews and contractors have moved on to John Parade.
In late July the council awarded a $600,000 tender for the construction of the shared pathway along John Parade, Merewether and work includes demolishing the existing 1.2-metre pathway and building a four to six-metre wide shared pathway with new lighting, fencing, and beach access.
The road works to change the traffic flow in John Parade to one way will be happening alongside the construction of the shared pathway.
An additional tender for more than $2.5million of works has also let. The work includes widening the promenade between Merewether Ocean Baths and the Merewether surf lifesaving club to create a shared path, new bleacher style seating connecting surf house facilities with the beach.
It also includes new lighting, seating and interpretive signage, landscaping, dune stabilisation, drainage, earthworks and wider viewing spaces.
