Newcastle will host for the four-day Australian Earth Science Convention that will attract more than 600 geologists and scientists to the region from July 7 to 10.

In another first, the convention will include a public forum and a public lecture series.

The forum, which will be held in a Q&A-style format and facilitated by 1233 ABC Newcastle's Paul Bevan, features some of the world's most notable commentators.

Panelists include science rock star, Professor Iain Stewart, who has popularised geology (and its impact on humans).
