A NEW Anzac memorial will be built on Swansea foreshore to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Australia's involvement in World War I.

The memorial will be funded by a $63,500 grant from the federal government's Anzac Centenary Grants Program.
Additional funds will come from Swansea RSL and Sub-Branch and the state government.
The memorial will consist of a steel rising sun that will stand at 4.5 metres tall and eight metres wide.
Shortland federal MP Jill Hall revealed the plans for the project alongside Swansea RSL president Gary Davies and vice-president Barney Blundell on Friday.
Mr Blundell developed the idea for the memorial with sub-branch treasurer Greg Jehn to accommodate the growing crowds that attend Swansea RSL's Anzac Day service.
"We simply can't fit the Anzac Day crowds in front of the club any more," Mr Blundell said.
"This new site will provide enough space for our dawn services and it is a fitting tribute to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War."
The memorial is a replica of a memorial in Onslow, Western Australia, with both sites positioned to feature the dawn sun.
