The items are contained in six recommendations unanimously endorsed by about 400 people who attended Saturday's Hunter Deserves Better Rally at Civic Park.
They belonged to groups such as the Newcastle Inner City Residents Alliance, Save Our Rail and the Better Planning Network.
The rally was organised to reflect their concerns about the lack of "sensible and transparent planning" for the region.
"Hunter citizens are keen to see development that promotes a happy, healthy and prosperous community, but there is concern in the region about recent government proposals, and how planning and development is being done," the Hunter Deserves Better's spokesman David Blyth said.
"Three critical issues highlight this: the removal of the passenger rail from the city CBD, the spot rezoning to allow three high-rise towers in the heritage precinct of Newcastle, and the secretive deal around the leasing of the Port of Newcastle."
The community will have another chance to speak on these issues and others at Better Planning Network's meeting this Thursday, September 11.
The meeting will be held at 7.30pm, Wesley Hall, 150 Beaumont Street, Hamilton. All welcome. For more details: Email betterplanningnetwork@gmail.com.
