In recognition of national Prostate Cancer Month, the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance has encouraged men to grab life by the "bowls" and participate in a local event.

Throughout September, the alliance will host a Hawaiian-themed barefoot bowls triples competition every Thursday night at Kahibah Sports Club to raise awareness of men's health.

Three-person teams are encouraged to dress in their loudest Hawaiian print T-shirts and go and join the fun.

The top two teams at the end of the competition will qualify for the NSW Bowls Aloha Tournament - the major prize is a trip to Hawaii.

Event co-ordinator Kim Simpson said barefoot bowls was for children, retirees and families.

"There's no impact on your body and it gets you out and about and making friends," she said.

"This event is a good opportunity for people who want to know more about prostate cancer and men's health in general but are afraid to ask, to come along and get answers in a casual setting."

All proceeds from ticket sales and raffles will go towards the alliance's counselling services.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for pensioners and children under 15.
